Location : The temple is located in Simhachalam mandal of Vizag District.
History : Legend has it that due to the curse of sages, Jaya and Vijaya, took birth as demons Hiranyakasipu and Hiranyaksha and wreaked havoc on earth. Sri Maha Vishnu destroyed Hiranyaksha due to which Hiranyakasipu, developed a deep rooted animosity. He underwent penance and obtained a boon by which he would not be killed anyone, anywhere, anytime. Bestowed with this boon, he began to torture and kill the devotees. His son Prahalad was quite different, and used to chant the name of the Lord. The Asura, tried to kill Prahalada in a number of ways, but could not succeed. One day he ordered his men to dip Prahalada in mid sea and place a long mountain, now called Simhachalam on his head. Sri Maha Vishnu hearing Prahalada’s prayers lifted the mountain and darted at a distance. Unable to break the firm faith of Prahalada,
Hiranyakasipu challenged his son to show the Lord in a pillar of the palace. The Asura broke the pillar, from which emerged Narasimha and killed Hiranyakasipu.
Prahalada was installed as a king and the Lord made His abode on this hill in the form of Varaha Narasimha. During his old age, Prahalad found the image of Lord Varaha Narasimha at the place and built a temple taking the services of Viswakarma.
Once, while crossing the hill, the aerial chariot of Pururava of Lunar dynasty, became motionless. On descending, it was discovered that Lord Narasimha was embedded in the crest of earth. When clearing the earth, he heard a Divine voice asking him not to expose the idol but cover it with sandal paste. It was told that the Lord should be worshipped in this form and only once in a year in the month of Visaka should his true image should be revealed.
