Presiding Deities : Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy. Other deities are Sri Bhramaramba Devi, Sri Sakshi Ganesha, Sri Basavanna and Sri Veerabhadra.
Location : The temple is located on the right side of river Krishna on a flat top of Nallamalla forests in Kurnool District.
History : A number of legends have grown around Srisailam and its principal deities. Among them the most significant one is that parvata, son of Silada Maharshi is said to have performed penance, pleased Lord Siva and made him agree to live in his body.
This parvatha assumed the shape of big hills, Sriparvatha and Siva lived on its top as Mallikarjuna. According to another legend, Chandravathi the ruler of Chandraguptha Pattana situated near Srisailam, on the opposite bank of Krishna ran away from her father and went up the hill and settled down there. One day, she discovered that one of her cows standing above a natural rock formation resembling a Siva Linga and shedding her milk over it.
Later, the Princess in her dream was informed that piece of stone was a self manifested Linga of God Mallikarjuna and began worshipping it. According to another story, Lord Siva and Parvathi compelled the hill, Srisailam to cajole their son, Kumaraswamy who settled there, after Bhoopradiskhna.
The Hindu mythology states that Goddess Bhramaramba had taken the shape of Shatapdi (Bee) to kill the cruel demon, Arunasura and then stayed at Srisailam along with Mallikarjuna Swamy. The history of Srisailam began with the Satavahanas who were the earliest rulers of Andhradesa.
Almost all the rulers of Andhra have performed pujas and have helped in the growth of the temple. It is said that the scared hills of Srisailam, has four gateways in the four cardinal directions - Trupurantakam, Siddavantam, Alampuram, Umamaheshwaram and four secondary gateways in four corners - Eleswaram, Somasila, Pushpagiri and Sangameshwaram. This divya kshetram is highlighted by the fact that while performing our rituals we specify place of locations of our existence with reference to Srisailam.
Major Festivals : Mahasivarathri Brahmotsavams, Ugadi and Dassera Celebrations and Kumbhotsavam.
How to reach : The temple is about 210 kms. from Hyderabad. The nearest railway station is Markapur 80 kms. away. Srisailam is well connected by APSRTC from all over the state.
Accommodation : There are Cottages, Devathanam and Tourism Guest Houses.
