This parvatha assumed the shape of big hills, Sriparvatha and Siva lived on its top as Mallikarjuna. According to another legend, Chandravathi the ruler of Chandraguptha Pattana situated near Srisailam, on the opposite bank of Krishna ran away from her father and went up the hill and settled down there. One day, she discovered that one of her cows standing above a natural rock formation resembling a Siva Linga and shedding her milk over it.
Later, the Princess in her dream was informed that piece of stone was a self manifested Linga of God Mallikarjuna and began worshipping it. According to another story, Lord Siva and Parvathi compelled the hill, Srisailam to cajole their son, Kumaraswamy who settled there, after Bhoopradiskhna.
The Hindu mythology states that Goddess Bhramaramba had taken the shape of Shatapdi (Bee) to kill the cruel demon, Arunasura and then stayed at Srisailam along with Mallikarjuna Swamy. The history of Srisailam began with the Satavahanas who were the earliest rulers of Andhradesa.
Almost all the rulers of Andhra have performed pujas and have helped in the growth of the temple. It is said that the scared hills of Srisailam, has four gateways in the four cardinal directions - Trupurantakam, Siddavantam, Alampuram, Umamaheshwaram and four secondary gateways in four corners - Eleswaram, Somasila, Pushpagiri and Sangameshwaram. Sri Maha Vishnu destroyed Hiranyaksha due to which Hiranyakasipu, developed a deep rooted animosity. He underwent penance and obtained a boon by which he would not be killed anyone, anywhere, anytime. Bestowed with this boon, he began to torture and kill the devotees. His son Prahalad was quite different, and used to chant the name of the Lord. The Asura, tried to kill Prahalada in a number of ways, but could not succeed. One day he ordered his men to dip Prahalada in mid sea and place a long mountain, now called Simhachalam on his head. Prahalada was installed as a king and the Lord made His abode on this hill in the form of Varaha Narasimha. During his old age, Prahalad found the image of Lord Varaha Narasimha at the place and built a temple taking the services of Viswakarma.
